High Angle Rescue

High angle rescue is a highly technical procedure that is more often overlooked and perhaps not ever thought of until the need for it arises and then the task is taken on by untrained albeit, well meaning rescuers.

By acting without the proper training, equipment and experience rescuers often end up being victims.

To minimize the chances of this happening, the Waterville Fire Department has several of their personnel certified in high angle rescue, has and maintains the proper equipment, and train themselves and other department members with this equipment regularly.

With proper training and equipment, the Waterville Fire Department has saved both man hours lost, due to injury, and decreased the chance of liability suit against them due to improper technique and equipment.

More and more the need for this expertise is rising with the increase of hikers, rock climbers, high-rise consruction and OSHA requirements on confined space work. To become certified, even at the basic level, individuals must become knowledgeable in knots, safety, equipment, dynamics of high angle rescue, first aid, cold water rescue, confined spaces, communications and rescue techniques.

Here in the Kennebec Valley, area residents and industry are fortunate to have several well trained and equipped personnel. Also, the City of Waterville has four (4) full time employees trained in advanced High Angle Rescue and certified as trainers.

Twice a year the Central Maine Fire Attack School, in conjunction with the Waterville Fire Department offers a two day class in High Angle Rescue. Here individuals learn types of ropes, knots, pulley systems, rappelling, raising and lowering victims, team work and safety. Although this certifies an individual at the basic level there must be a commitment to continue training and honing their skills.
