Smoke Detectors
Did you know that 73% of all fire related deaths occur in homes without smoke detectors?
Fact
In a test of smoke detectors, it was found that installing one smoke detector outside your bedroom door would provide at least three minutes of warning 35% of the time, while installing an additional alarm on every floor would provide at least three minutes of warning 89% of the time.
Fact
Households with the highest overall fire rates in the United States have the fewest smoke detectors.
What you can do
- Install smoke detectors in every bedroom and on every floor.
- Test your smoke detectors weekly.
- Replace batteries in your smoke detector once a year, or on the first sign of a weak or low battery power alarm, which most smoke detectors will do.
- Never borrow a smoke detectors battery to operate any other battery operated equipment.
- Replace smoke detectors after ten years of working use.
Prevention is the cure. Education is the key.
